Our founding partner, C. Y. Byrd, moved to Delray Beach in 1923 after earning his law degree from the University of Florida. That same year he started a law firm that has continuously operated to this day. Mr. Byrd was also very active in the community, having served as both a city councilman and as a Palm Beach County commissioner for eighteen years.

In 1946, Rhea Whitley, a graduate of Washington and Lee Law School, was brought into the firm. Mr. Whitley had been a special agent for the FBI and served as the first special counsel for the UnAmerican Activities Committee of the U.S. Congress for four years. The firm was known as Byrd & Whitley.

In 1966, two additional lawyers joined the firm, C. Y. Byrd III and Fred B. Devitt, Jr. Mr. Byrd earned his law degree from Stetson University. Mr. Devitt, Jr., was previously employed by the First National Bank of Delray where he served as a Trust Officer. Mr. Devitt earned both his undergraduate degree and law degree from the College of William and Mary. The firm would later be known as Byrd, Whitley, Byrd & Devitt, P.A.

In 1984, J. Jeffrey Thistle joined the firm. Mr. Thistle is a graduate of Washington & Lee and earned his law degeree from Nova University. The firm was then known as Byrd, Devitt, Otto & Thistle, P.A.

In 1988, Fred B. Devitt III joined the firm. Mr. Devitt is a graduate of Mercer University and earned his law degree from Cumberland School of law. The firm became known as Devitt, Thistle & Devitt, P.A.

In 2015, The firm of Devitt, Thistle & Devitt, P.A., merged with Jose L. Lorenzo, P.A. Today the firm is known as Devitt, Thistle & Lorenzo, PLLC. Mr. Lorenzo is a graduate of Professional Studies from Barry University. He earned his law degree from the St. Thomas University School of Law. He graduated magna cum laude as class valedictorian and was the recipient of scholastic achievement awards in the areas of Income Taxation, Estate and Gift Tax, Corporate Tax, Taxation of International Transactions, and Real Estate Transactions. Prior to commencing his career as an attorney, Mr. Lorenzo worked for nearly a decade in the South Florida banking industry. He served as Vice President of a Miami-based financial institution with primary responsibility for a large international and professional client base.
